COBRA Cancelled My Coverage Retroactive 2 Months, Now I'm Being Charged Pharmacy Bill

In January, COBRA canceled my coverage (w/ Blue Shield) retroactive to November, saying my payment was late. During November and December, I continued to use my insurance, thinking I had coverage. I'm on numerous prescription medications, so I used my insurance card to get those filled. Now the insurance claims have been denied and Blue Shield is claiming I owe them $1,800 for prescriptions filled in Nov and Dec. Is this legal?

were you late with your payments in October or November?
